About Chart Atelier

Chart Atelier is a service for building charts from official statistics and turning them into Excel and PowerPoint documents. It is currently in beta, and every feature is free to use.

Features

Build charts from official statistics

Pick series from Japanese and international official statistics and plot them as line, bar and scatter charts, rankings, yield curves, population pyramids, cross tables and more. Series in different units go on the left and right axes, and year-on-year changes and contributions are calculated on the spot. The data is the same as in our sister service, Economic Data Square.

Overlay your own data

Load data from Excel or CSV and overlay it on the same chart as the official statistics. The numbers stay in your browser and are never sent to our servers.

Export to Excel and PowerPoint

Exported charts open in Excel and PowerPoint as charts you can edit, not as pictures (a few chart types are exported as images). Source and licence notes go in the same file.

Share and keep track

Share a chart with a view-only link; the people you send it to do not need an account. Put the charts you check often on a board and see them on one screen.

How this differs from Economic Data Square

Chart Atelier draws on the same data as Economic Data Square. If you only need to find and read statistics, the free Economic Data Square is enough. Chart Atelier is for finishing a chart to put in a document or show to someone.

Use it from Claude

You can use Chart Atelier inside a conversation with Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant. Ask in the chat to find statistics, build a chart and export it to Excel or PowerPoint.

  • Ask something like "put Japan's wages and CPI, year on year, in one chart", and Claude finds the series and builds the chart. Besides time series, it can draw rankings (by prefecture, for example), Japan and US government bond yield curves, GDP contributions by demand component, two-indicator scatters such as the Phillips curve, cross-sections of countries or prefectures as scatters and bubbles, Japan's population pyramid, cross tables such as trade by commodity and partner country (and the total of a row or column over time), and prefecture maps.
  • The chart appears in the conversation (apps that cannot display it get a text description). Follow up with "start from 2015" or "make it a bar chart" and it is redrawn.
  • Export it as an editable Excel or PowerPoint chart (population pyramids and prefecture maps can be exported as an image from the app; cross tables export to Excel as a table, and to PowerPoint as an image from the app). The download link works once, for 10 minutes.
  • Save the charts you want to keep to My charts and continue editing them in the app.

Setup

claude.ai (including the desktop and mobile apps): in Settings, under Connectors, choose "Add custom connector" and enter the URL below. Leave the Client ID fields empty, then sign in when prompted.

https://chartatelier.aidotters.com/mcp

Claude Code: add it with the command below, then sign in from /mcp.

claude mcp add --transport http chart-atelier https://chartatelier.aidotters.com/mcp

It works with Claude (claude.ai, desktop and mobile) and Claude Code. During the beta, anyone who signs in can use it for free.

  • Charts are saved to the account you sign in with when you allow Claude to connect. If you are signed in to the app with a different account, those charts will not appear there.
  • How the numbers and charts you give Claude are handled (including whether they are used for training) depends on your Claude settings and terms.
  • Results passed to Claude carry their sources. Keep the source credits when you use them in your own documents.
